Rejected Lover Twitters Engagement Ring Away

When Anthony Gardiner went to Hong Kong and spent $5000 on an engagement ring, he expected a ‘happily ever after’ scenario.  Unfortunately, his girlfriend did not.  Since he bought the ring in Hong Kong and can’t return it, and because he has said that he wouldn’t give the ‘unlucky’ ring to the next woman of his dreams, he decided to do something fun with the ring.

At first, Gardiner thought he would hide the ring and let someone just stumble onto it.  Then he came up with something even better: a treasure hunt.  On Saturday morning, June 6, he will hide the ring and post the first clue on his Twitter page at 8 a.m.  He plans to continue posting clues until someone finds the ring.  If no one does, the clues will become directions.

When someone does finally find the 0.25-carat diamond set in white gold, Gardiner will emerge from a nearby location.  He says, “The person who finds it, I’ll go over and say, ‘Congratulations, here’s the valuation’.”  He is also hoping that person who finds it will be, “somebody who’s keen, who’s found a cool chick and who wants to give them something they normally wouldn’t be able to afford.”  A treasure like this is as likely—if not more so—to attract people who want to sell the ring as it is to draw men in love, but Gardiner maintains the hope that it will go to someone who is worthy of such a prize.

With over 700 followers on his Twitter page already, there should be a lot of people, Blackberries and iPhones in hand, wandering around the Wellington area this weekend.  His story has even been picked up my many major media outlets, and his followers include The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Times, and the UK’s Daily Telegraph.

Already, Anthony Gardiner has made something great out of something potentially devastating.  He is hoping that the ring finds better luck with its next owner.

If you’re looking for a ring and live in New Zealand, or if you just want to follow the fun, Gardiner can be found at http://twitter.com/donoogle_com.  Happy hunting.
